Was looking to make a simple Blonde Ale before spring hits here in Oregon, and before my wife had another baby. I love hoppy IPA's and thick Stouts, and trust me there is no shortage living in Portland, but I also appreciate a great-tasting simple spring/summer beer with good balanced hop flavor. I also feel like it's easy to cover up off-flavors with an abundance of other flavors (i.e. - IPA/Stout/Porter), so this was a good benchmark for my brewing techniques. With all those things in mind, I decided to try my 2nd SMaSH beer since I didn't have a lot of time to brew or secure ingredients. Used what I had on hand for hops/yeast/malt, and also wanted to make something my in-laws would drink (other than BMC).
I know that 2-Row single malt beers tend to brew pretty much one-note, so I added 1# of home-toasted malt. Toasted at 275 deg for 30 min, and mixed them around halfway. Had an unmistakable grapenuts cereal aroma when they were finished, but added just enough of a toasted flavor to make this beer not too one dimensional. I have never used Crystal hops before, because I normally tend to stay in my wheelhouse of C-hops from the pacific NW. Love the floral and subtle spice they provided. Definitely going to use them more often alongside citrus flavored late-hops in the future to round out APA/IPA's.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do...bring on spring/summer!
