Are LME and DME interchangable?

I realize that LME has water in it so that needs to be accounted for. Other than that though can one use DME when a recipe calls for LME or vise versa?
 
DME , i have read, keeps fresher longer than LME
so the beer with DME could be better than beer made with old LME
 
if you are brewing lighter beers and you are concerned with SRM (color), you will want to add some DME at the beginning to extract the hops, then add the LME at the last 10-15 to avoid carmelization of the LME. it will change the flavor some, for the better IMO, but you can make great beer with either.
